City of Providence Conducts Evacuation Drills to Increase Culture of Preparedness

As part of the City’s ongoing effort to prioritize safety awareness and preparedness the Providence Emergency Management Agency (PEMA) in collaboration with the Providence Fire Department will conduct evacuation drills at City Hall, 444 Westminster Street, the Providence Public Safety Complex and the Department of Public Works buildings. The exercises are aimed at training and familiarizing employees on proper evacuation procedures. There is no action needed by the public but be aware this is not an emergency situation. These buildings will be closed to the public for the duration of these evacuation exercises.

Mayor Smiley Announces $870k Investment in Overdose Prevention

As part of National Recovery Month, Mayor Brett P. Smiley, Chief of Policy and Resiliency Sheila Dormody and Providence Director of Housing and Human Services Emily Freedman today announced major investments to support the ongoing implementation of the City's Overdose Prevention Strategy, which outlines the ways in which the City will work to expand investments in recovery and sets long-term goals of further integrating behavioral health supports across City departments. The City also announced that it has been awarded a multimillion Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act (CARA) grant from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).

Mayor Smiley, FirstWorks Invite Public to Attend PVDFest

PROVIDENCE, RI – Mayor Brett P. Smiley, FirstWorks Executive Artistic Director Kathleen Pletcher and Department of Arts, Culture and Tourism Director Joe Wilson Jr. today gathered with PVDFest artists and supporters to invite the public to Providence’s signature arts festival this weekend in Downtown Providence. This year’s festival begins on Friday, September 6 from 5:00 – 9:00 pm in Kennedy Plaza and Burnside Park. The festival continues on Saturday, September 7 from 12:00 pm – 8:00 pm in Downtown Providence. A rain date of Sunday, September 8 is held for extreme or inclement weather.

Mayor Smiley Announces Historic $55.6 Million for Affordable Housing Construction

Mayor Brett P. Smiley and the Providence Redevelopment Agency (PRA) today announced that the PRA is awarding an additional $12.7 million to various agencies for the development and preservation of affordable housing units in Providence. This substantial investment is a part of the City's ongoing, multi-pronged approach to addressing the housing crisis and brings the Providence Housing Trust’s total commitment to affordable housing construction to $55.6 million since 2022.

Washington Bridge Closure Small Business Grants
